1. READING THERAPY

Therapy is available for both Afrikaans and English.

In the computer class we concentrate on:

  • Reading accuracy and speed
  • Spelling
  • Comprehension
  • Perceptual Skills
  • Language Skills

In the memory methods class the following therapies are used:

  • Eye Kinetics
  • Basic Reading Skills
  • Brain Gym
  • Handle Therapy
  • Reading Skills
  • Spelling Rules
  • Lexicon (Vocabulary)
  • Working memory

These techniques are combined to enhance learning, reading and spelling abilities.

The basic skills of reading equip students with better reading abilities.

These skills involve:

  • Eye span
  • Spatial Relations
  • Laterality
  • Form Perception
  • Auditory Perception
  • Sequencing

Eye kinetics is a series of eye exercises which is used to strengthen the eye muscles. Like any other muscle in the body, the eye muscles can also be strengthened through exercise. When the muscles in the eye are strengthened, it leads to smooth eye movement which is very important when reading. It is important to note that these exercises will not improve vision.

Brain Gym helps the child to strengthen the nerve-endings between all his senses and brain, by the repetition of easy exercises which involve series of small body movements.

Brain Gym focuses on the physical aspects of reading and learning. When the physical working of the brain is strengthened and improved, the reading and learning process will also be strengthened and improved. Good physical development means that both ears, eyes, hands, feet and all of the senses will work in unison.

The aim of Brain Gym is not to change a child’s dominance profile (e.g. right-handed, left-eyed, right ear) as determined with the initial evaluation, but to enhance the co-operation of the eyes, hands and ears. A person has the lifelong ability to build new nerve paths which will then lead to better writing, learning and reading skills. The right half of the body is controlled by the left brain and the left part of the body by the right brain.

Brain Gym integrates laterality, centering and focus, which helps the child to process new information easier. Laterality coordinates left and right sides of the brain to communicate effectively. Centering coordinates the top and bottom parts of the brain for organization of thoughts and actions. Focus coordinates the back receptive and introvert part of the brain for comprehension and perspective.

Handle therapy includes several exercises which strengthens the underlying micro-systems in order to make the body work optimally as a unit, or macro system. Human functioning is of ecosystemic nature – all systems in the body work together and form a unit. Through exercise the weaker micro-systems are strengthened.

Several macro systems are strengthened by one exercise to make the body function as a macro system. An activity like “crazy straw” will for instance improve: eye movement, articulation, tongue and lip control, sound sensitivity and blow control.

Laughter therapy: Reduce stress and enhance performance.

2.  Ticket to Reading Programme

Ensure successful development of your child by giving him a head start in reading.

Optimal reading ensures optimal learning!

Our Ticket to Reading programme focus on the child; equipping him with the most essential academic tool of all: READING!

Your little one will greatly benefit from this programme starting from the early age of 4.5 years. After an initial basic skills evaluation, the results will be thoroughly discussed and thereafter therapy will be done on a weekly basis.
